The Lotz Cisterns date from the ancient Israelite period, 3,000 years ago, when the Negev desert was a source of agriculture. The cisterns trapped the winter rains, providing water for drinking and for herds. Settlement continued in the area until 586 BCE. Of the 17 cisterns over a 2 sq. km. area, 15 still collect water in the winter months.
